National Anthem: June 27-July 4 2024
Unpopular opinion: “The Star-Spangled Banner” is not a good national anthem. As we head into Independence Day, this week’s assignment is to write a new one. You can choose to write lyrics that fit our current anthem’s melody, write something entirely new, or even write a national anthem for a completely different country than ours, existing or imaginary. This is primarily a writing assignment, but if you can sing or play an instrument, feel free to record your anthem for us to hear!

An alternate version of the national anthem. (Had to massage the ‘ol thesaurus. Sing it if you wish.)
Take a look just out there, as we wait on sunrise.
It was easy to see- at the sundown last evening.
Thirteen bands and boxed stars, o’er a battlefield site
From the high walls we peered- it was flapping so freely!
Saw the crimson fire works!
The booms scared us up there!
And still we could see, it was flowing in air!
So look by the star lighted morning to see-
Flag flapping in the breeze? Are we done? Is there peace?

Next Week’s Assignment:
Guerilla Kindness: Create a small piece of art and place it in a public location for others to find and enjoy. It can have a positive or uplifting message if you like, or it can simply be a piece of art that brings a bit of joy into someone’s life when they stumble upon it.
