Intentional Misinterpretation: August 17-24, 2023

As you move through the world this week, pay attention to signs, billboards, posters, etc. Try to find some that strike you as funny because their messages can be interpreted in a different way than they intended - either because they use words and phrases that have multiple meanings, or simply because whoever wrote them didn’t have a great grasp on spelling or grammar. Submit at least one example, preferably 3-5. Explain your interpretation unless you think it’s obvious.

Due August 24 by 7:00 p.m.

Welcome to the 1st annual Caution Festival. Our apologies for rescheduling so many times due to potential risks - our original date was postponed due to a light breeze that could have downed tree branches; the make-up date was pushed back due to a 10% chance of rain, and today we nearly canceled the whole thing when we realized the dangers of having a festival so close to such a busy street (see above). Anyway, we hope you’ve brought plenty of sunscreen, snacks, a flashlight, a first aid kit, and some rope and flares, just in case. Have fun today, but please, be very, very careful.

Fake dogs.

In case you’re in the market for a really big piano.

Okay, by the time I took this photo, someone had corrected the sign by adding a “D.” But for weeks it said “Make sure door is close” and I kept thinking, “It’s very close - it’s like three inches away.”

The sign clearly explains that an out of order repair is in progress. Seeing the bathroom is the proof.

Next Week’s Assignment:

Write a poem, song, or song parody about the end of summer. (Expecting some extra saltiness from those of you who are teachers.)

Due August 31 by 7:00 p.m.
