How I Spend the Holidays: December 14-28, 2023

The holidays are busy, so we’ll make this one easy and wide-open, and give you two weeks to get it done. Give us a glimpse into what you do for the holidays. Choose any medium you like - writing, drawing, photography, collage, whatever - and document some part of your holiday time - travel, time with family, traditions, much-needed relaxation, solitude, etc. Just show us something about how you spend the season.

The Submissions:

by Heart of Darkness

Nothing about this year was a typical holiday or had anything to do with traditions. Somehow I remembered to order a few gifts, we seem to have a tree in the living room, I dedicated a wild amount of time to icing cookies for someone who is operating on zero sleep, and we threw a new human in the mix. My hope for New Year’s Eve is a lot of quality time with the dog, on the couch. Happy 2024, everyone!

Hello Artsy folks!

The above clip came to mind regarding this assignment. Recently viewed the movie for the holidays (surprise, surprise). We also watched “Christmas with the Kranks” and noted it reflected our current life situation- kids grown and flown.

In the past we’d drive to see lights and trees. There are still holiday outings like going somewhere to experience the holiday decor and spirit. This year it was the Pioneer Woman Mercantile in Pawhuska, OK.

Happy holidays!

Next Week’s Assignment:

As I’m sure I mentioned last year at this time, I’ve never been a particular fan of making New Year’s resolutions — or of the whole holiday itself, for that matter. Everything about it feels arbitrary and like setting yourself up for disappointment. However, I do recognize the good that can come from using a point in time, no matter how arbitrary, to step outside yourself and take stock of where you’ve been, where you are, and where you’d like to be, and to try to set some intentions for yourself going forward. With that in mind, here’s this week’s assignment:

Instead of creating a list of resolutions for 2024, think of one central thought or “mantra” or guiding principle you’d like to remind yourself of throughout the coming year and use as a guidepost to keep you on track toward a particular goal, set of goals, or intention. This mantra can be a word, a phrase, or even a short paragraph, but keep it simple enough to be memorable and focused. Create a poster or other piece of art that displays the mantra, decorated or embellished in some way.

Due January 4 by 7:00 p.m.
