Next-level Art: July 20-August 3, 2023

Find artwork at a thrift store, yard sale, in a magazine or your basement - wherever - and “improve” upon it in some way. Don’t forget to include both the “before” and the “after” images.

Best I can do. I give you “Icarus Ranch” and “Homage to My Nephew.”

Welp. I had every intention of actually painting this. I even bought brushes and oil paints, which I have never used before, and planned to somehow paint Mr. Stay-Puft into this painting. But my last two weeks have been jam=packed and time got away from me, so instead I had to resort to Photoshop.

For many years, this painting hung above my Grandma’s sofa. She had bought it - for $10, I think - at a starving artists show. When I was maybe 10 or 11, I sat in her living room and recreated this scene (relatively well, surprisingly) with crayons. When she died and the family was discussing who would get which piece of furniture, I asked for this painting. It doesn’t match my decorating style, but it has hung in my closet for years so I see it and think of her. Thinking about that now, maybe it’s best that I didn’t have time to “improve” on this work of art after all.

Sending two different works.

The first was inspired by my little ass (a finger puppet donkey that is always in my handbag). Saw a black and white painting of the moon so I added my ass to it(lower right).

On a recent trip we gathered drift wood for porch decor. Purchased a painted wooden block, gathered my pencils, checked a beach sunset photo for color reference and scribbled on it for a bit. I the beach scene on my porch. Not sure how it will stand up in the Oklahoma heat.
