You’re a Grand Old Flag: June 29-July 6, 2023
We missed Flag Day, but we’ll do this in honor of Independence Day instead.
Design your own flag or crest. Bonus points if you include some kind of motto in Latin or an explanation of the symbolism behind your design.
Due July 6 by 7:00 p.m.

Full disclosure: I found the basis for this crest online and modified it - drawing from scratch is not my strong suit.
Flags of Ohio and Rhode Island represent where my parents are from.
M and A are my first and middle initials. 1974 is my birth year.
Top center is a symbol for science/rational thought and/or atheism, mostly because the original crest I borrowed had a cross here, and that ain’t me. :)
Shield is flanked by a tiger, representing the Chinese Zodiac symbol for the year I was born, and my dog, Zuul.
Shield contains the Japanese symbol for intelligence and cleverness - qualities I look for in people - and the constellation Lyra, representing poetry and music - or in my case, my love of art, music, writing, etc.
Blue and green in the shield are a vague nod to Scottish tartans - my lineage, as I understand it, is a pretty big mix, but Scottish seems to be the most dominant.
Below the family name is the Hebrew/Aramaic phrase Mikha’el, which apparently is where my first name was derived from.
Below that is the zip code for the city I live in, represented in Roman numerals
Across the banner is the Latin phrase “Super cogitare omnia, sed rideat omnia,” or “Overthink everything, but laugh at everything.” Story of my life.

Dark gray portion at the bottom represents the open road - my love of travel, road trips, time alone exploring and discovering new things. (also my weird love of the “color” gray)
On the horizon at the end of the “road,” two “spotlights,” representing my love of live music, concerts, performance, and other experiences that I seek out and go to great lengths to be there for.
Also at the horizon, the lighter blue represents water and relaxation. Though I live in the landlocked Midwest, I feel connected to water and love being near the ocean, streams, and other sources of water. I also love being in water - pools, the ocean, whatever - and find it relaxing. Time away from regular life is essential to get me out of my head and recentered and feeling relaxed for a fleeting moment.
The dark blue and red represent the dichotomy and conflict within me. Blue is often associated with authority and loyalty - and I tend to be a rule follower and bound by what society expects of me. However, red often represents rebellion, and that is the other side of me - the side that thinks society’s rules and norms are bullshit, that the status quo and power structures needs to end, and that we have to stand up for what’s right and get in “good trouble.” Also a little “right brain / left brain” fighting each other represented here.

Lots of poop to manage in the last few weeks. If google translate is accurate this is “forever waiting on $h!+” for your consideration.
Cheers!
