The Submissions:

by Journal Kurtz

by Heart of Darkness

I went with a completely cardboard collagraph this week and used it to experiment with a series of vibrating prints!

“End of Semester” - by Soldier Clinging to Helicopter

(spacey, detached billionaire relief on Amazon box flap)

Once again, what was in my head and what I was able to execute are two very different things.

I had some maybe too-grandiose ideas here. On one hand, I was trying to subtly nod to Kara Walker’s work in silhouettes, but with cardboard instead of black paper. But, knowing I did not have the cultural background or life experience to even consider tackling the subject matter Kara does, I tried to lean into the fact that I was using cardboard from Amazon, and make cutouts of a Bezos-esque figure in space, hovering above Earth. The squiggly thing in the middle was originally intended to be either a lasso or a noose (another nod to Kara) to suggest the stranglehold that Bezos and his ilk have on Earth. But, thanks to a shaky X-acto knife hand, I lost part of that in my cutting and ended up with what looks more like a space serpent. Or, maybe it’s the cord that tethered Bezos to his phallic rocket ship and it has come undone, representing how billionaires have become untethered from the realities of those of us living normal lives on this planet. Yeah. Let’s go with that.

“Here comes my stuff from the Amazonia” - by Anonymous Frau Redux

Held off on recycling for a few weeks, which was helpful for assignment materials. Not skilled with carving or heavy duty cutting and pondered the work a bit.

Inspiration just rolled down my street every day, but today it landed on my doorstep. Admittedly I am equally amused and horrified at the months of saved boxes to send something to someone at a moment’s notice(admit it, you like a fine corrugated fiberboard carton too).

Bonus point submission (sung in place of the last verse):
Last year in December, I was running for the door.
I had to find the package box we ordered two nights before.
“Perhaps,” said my wingman, “it’s just some yarn you can weave.
You can checkout anytime you like, just click and never leave.”

Next Week’s Assignment:

Redaction Poetry (aka: erasure poetry, aka: blackout poetry)
(more info)

Create a poem using any written source material by erasing or redacting the undesired words until a new “text” emerges.  Your choice of redaction tool and any added artwork you want to put into it.

Bonus points if the poem is in conversation with or somehow responding to the original material.

Due May 5 by 7:00 p.m.*

*Note: Hello, this is your Captain speaking. I will be on vacation during the next two Artpocalypse Thursdays. We’ll continue as usual, but there’s a good chance I won’t get submissions posted on Thursday evening (May 5), so it may be Friday or Saturday before those and the next mission appear on this site.
